Soursop – The Natural Cancer Killer
Cancer is one of the World’s deadliest disease. Being diagnosed of cancer is like receiving a death sentence in my part of the world. The conventional treatment of this disease has so many side effects like hair loss, weight loss, the killing of healthy cells which eventually leads to weakened immune system. These side effects could kill the patient even before cancer spreads. So many cancer patients are turning to alternative medicine to find solution to their health issues. Several research and studies has shown that soursop has anti cancer properties.
Soursop is found mostly in tropical regions of the world. Its scientific name is Anonna muricana. The fruit has a white juicy flesh with a slightly sour-acid taste . Soursop has been found to be 10,000times stronger than chemotherapy in attacking and killing cancer cells. One study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea and published in the Journal of Natural Products stated that Soursop was 10,000 times more effective against cancer than the popular chemotherapy drug, Adriamycin. Soursop not only kills cancerous cells but also prevent the development of cancer. Purdue university in 1997 published that acetogenin in soursop are not only effective in killing tumors that has proven resistant to anti cancer agents but have special affinity for cells which are resistant to conventional therapy.
Soursop contains an active ingredient called annonaceous acetogenin. This active ingredient is found in the stem, bark, seeds,and leaf of soursop tree. The leave has the highest concentration of the active ingredient. Acetogenins inhibit the flow of blood to cancerous cells and by so doing prevent nutrients from getting to them. This eventually leads to cell death. Acetogenin only target cancerous cells unlike chemotherapy which affect both healthy and cancerous cell. Soursop therapy has been found to be effective against 12 different types of cancer including pancreatic, colon and breast cancer. Along with acetogenin, sour sop also contains other antioxidants like quinolones and alkaloids which neutralise’s free radicals and prevent chronic diseases.
It is necessary to apply caution when using soursop as it has been discovered to contains certain compounds that may damage the neurons. Eating the fruit could lead to movement disorders similar to Parkinson’s disease, according to a case-control study in the French West Indies. It is also advisable for pregnant women not consume large amounts of this fruit or the leaves, barks or seeds, as the fetus produces large amounts of ATP, thus acetogenins could attack the developing fetus.
