<honey >

Honey has a long history of traditional use as a cough  remedy. This  liquid  gold as it is popularly referred to is produced by bees.  The flavour and colour of honey depends on the type of nectar  visited  by the bees 🐝  . Dark coloured honey has stronger taste and  contains more nutrients when compared to mild coloured ones.

Honey is a natural sweetner that is made up of simple sugars . It also contains natural antioxidants, enzymes and minerals including iron, zinc, potassium,calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and selenium. Vitamins found in honey include vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin.

The Chemical composition of honey is altered by heat. It is not advisable to expose honey to excessive  heat . According to Ayurveda Wellness, ‘when honey is heated above 108 degrees Fahrenheit, it becomes transformed into a glue-like substance that is extremely difficult to digest. This substance is considered a toxin (ama), since it adheres to the tissues of the body and is very difficult to remove.”

The organic  composition of  honey is a pointer to the numerous  health benefits that can be derived from it. Some of the  benefits include

. Excellent  energy  booster

. Aids sleep

. Block free radicals

. Treat wounds and burns

.Treats dandruff

.sooths cough

How dose  honey sooth cough.

For a better understanding of how honey helps in the treatment of cough, let’s look at the causes of cough. Cough is  a symptom of cold, caused by viral infection of the respiratory tract. Other symptoms of cold include running 🏃 nose, sore throat, sneezing etc.   If a person has a strong  immune system he or she should be able to fight off the infection. So to prevent cold, one should focus more on building a strong immune system.

What honey dose is that it treats the symptoms associated with cough. According to abc.ne.au, One US study did find honey was better at reducing a cough’s severity, frequency and annoyance when compared to either no treatment, or honey-flavoured dextromethorphan (the main ingredient in most over-the-counter cough remedies).

In another 2012 study, 300 children were assigned to one of four different night-time cough treatments: three were different types of honey and the fourth was a placebo. The researchers found any one of the types of honey was more effective at treating night-time cough than the placebo treatment.

The researchers theorized that the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and salivary-gland-stimulating effects of honey and the antioxidant effects of coffee had a synergistically protective effect on mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

CAUTION
It is not safe to give honey to children under the age of one year as they are a source of botulism spores.  The infants may not be able to withstand it as their immune system is not yet developed.

Raw honey  can be used to overcome challenges associated with cough. It should be taken in moderation. Raw honey when eaten in large amount has the ability to  increase one’s insulin and lepton levels and may invariably leads to ill  health.
