Excessive Kola Nut Consumption is Bad for Your Health.

When it comes to what we consume or put in our mouth and how beneficial it is, the watch word should be moderation. Kolanut with all its benefits also has some health implications when consumed in excess.

Excessive Kola nut consumption is LIKELY UNSAFE due to its caffeine content. Very high doses of caffeine can cause death. The fatal dose is estimated to be about 10-14 grams; that’s 150-200 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. 1

The caffeine content makes it a unsafe for pregnant women and nursing mothers and those suffering from high blood pressure , cardiovascular diseases, insominia, anxiety problem , high cholesterol level, seizure and palpitation.

Side Effects of Excessive Kola nut consumption

Some of the physical side effects of excessive Kola nut consumption include headaches, jitteriness, irregular heartbeat, unstable hands, upset stomach, anxiety  and sleeping disorders.

1. Pregnancy and Breast Feeding

Large amount Kola nut contain too much caffeine which might increase the chances of miscarriage, early delivery, and low birth weight in pregnant women. Also caffeine can be taken up by infant during breastfeeding

and can cause sleep disturbances, irritability, and increased bowel activity in breast-fed infants.

2. Stomach Upset 

Excessive Kola nut consumption could worsen duodenal or peptic ulcer. Kola nut increases acid secretion in the stomach which could worsen the symptoms of ulcer.1  It could also cause heartburn, nausea and vomiting.

3. Weak Bones (Osteoporosis)

Studies have shown that caffeine found in kola nut can cause osteoporosis in adult and perturbed bone formation in adolescent. Caffeine in large amounts may interfere with absorption and metabolism of calcium and increase the amount of calcium that is flushed out in the urine.  Calcium and vitamin D are used for formation of bones. Kola nut should be taken in moderation if you have a weak bone condition.

4. Drug inhibitor

There are some drugs that should not be taken with kolanut because it counters the therapeutic effects of the drugs in the body. Drugs like muscle relaxant, heart medication, high blood pressure medication, nitrate and calcium channel blockers shouldn’t be taken with kolanut.2

5. Infertility

Excessive Kola nut consumption and prolong usage can cause reduction in testosterone level, sperm motility, viability, and count thus promoting infertility in men likewise in women. It can cause reduction in weight of ovary and womb due to the perturbed oestrous cycle though this is dose-dependent.

6. Heart Disorder 

Kola nut is a risk for those who already suffer from hypertension as research has shown that caffeine in cola nut increase blood pressure levels. It is also known to boost heart rate and metabolism but at greater concentrations can be fatal. Scientists concluded that people who eat more than one kola nut per day may be at greater risk of developing heart disorders.4

7. Bleeding Disorders

Cola nut contains caffeine, which might slow blood clotting. This makes some experts worry that cola nut might make bleeding disorders worse. kola nut should be avoided before and after surgery because of effect on the blood clotting process.
